விருதாக வழங்கப்படும் ஆஸ்கர் சிலையின் மொத்த உயரம் பதிமூன்றரை அங்குலம் (அதாவது ஒரு அடி நீளத்திற்கு சற்றே கூடுதல்). எடையோ எட்டரை பவுண்ட். இடையில் இரண்டாம் உலகப்போர் நடைபெற்றபோது சிலை செய்ய உலோகம் கிடைக்கவில்லை என ஆஸ்கரை 'பிளாஸ்டர் ஆஃப் பாரீஸ்' என்ற சிலை செய்யும் சுண்ணாம்பினால் செய்து தங்க முலாம் பூசியும் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள் (நம் ஊரில் கூட சாமி சிலை, தாஜ்மஹால், மிருகங்களின் சிலைகளை செய்து தெருவோரம் 5 ரூபாய், 10 ரூபாய்க்கு விற்பனை செய்வார்களே, அந்த முறையில்..!). சில நேரங்களில் பிரிட்டானியம் என்ற உலோகக் கலவை சிலை செய்ய பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
கடந்த காலங்களில் பல முறை விருது வழங்கும் தினம் முடிவு செய்யப்பட்ட தேதிக்கு முன்னும், பின்னும் மாறிப் போனாலும் கூட அனைவரது கவனத்தையும் கவர்ந்த முக்கிய செய்தியாக அது அப்போது மாறியிருந்தது. முதல் ஆண்டு விருது வழங்கப்பட்டபோது மொத்தம் 15 விருதுகள் கை மாறின. ஆனால் இரண்டாம் ஆண்டு, இது ஏழு ஆக குறைந்து போனது. சிறந்த நடிகர், நடிகை, படம், இயக்குனர், எழுத்து வடிவம், ஒளிப்பதிவு, அரங்க வடிவமைப்பு (Art Direction) என்பன மட்டுமே ஆரம்ப நாட்களில் அகாடமி விருதுக்கான துறைகளாக இருந்தன. இவை மட்டுமின்றி சிறப்பு விருது என்று ஒன்றை உருவாக்கவும் இவர்கள் திட்டமிட்டிருந்தாலும் முதல் ஆண்டில் இது இடம் பெறவில்லை. இதனால் இரண்டாம் ஆண்டில் இரண்டு விருதுகளாக வழங்கப்பட்டன.
அச்சிறப்பு விருதுகளில் ஒன்றை, 'சர்வ சிரஞ்சீவி'யாகிவிட்ட நகைச்சுவை நடிகர் சார்லி சாப்ளினும், மற்றொன்றை வார்னர் பிரதர்ஸ் நிறுவனமும் பெற்றன. ''சர்க்கஸ்'' என்ற படத்தைத் தயாரித்து இயக்கி, நடித்து என பல்வேறு பணிகளில் வித்தைகள், சாகசம் செய்து காட்டியதற்காக சாப்ளினுக்கும், பேசா மடந்தையாகக் கிடந்த திரைப்படங்களைப் பேச வைக்கும் முயற்சிகள் நடந்த போது 'தி ஜாஸ் சிங்கர்' எனும் பேசும் படத்தை துணிந்து எடுத்து வெற்றி கண்டதற்காக வார்னர் பிரதர்ஸ் நிறுவனத்திற்கும் இவ்விருதுகள் வழங்கப்பட்டிருந்தன. அதன்பிறகு திரைப்படத் தொழில் நுட்பம் இன்று எவ்வளவோ முன்னேறி ஸ்டீரியோ, டால்ஃபி, டி.டி.எஸ் என்று தாண்டி முன்னேறிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது என்பது தனி கதை. அது சரி அகாடமி அவார்ட் என்று இருந்த இந்த விருதுக்கு ஆஸ்கார் என்று எப்படி பெயர் வந்தது..? அது ஒரு சுவராஸ்யமான சம்பவம்..!
'அகாடமி' தொடங்கி அதன் மூலம் விருது கொடுப்பதாக முடிவு செய்த பிறகு இந்த விருதுக்கான 'மாடல் சிலை எப்படியிருக்கலாம்' என்ற கேள்வி எழுந்தது. படம் வரையத் தெரிந்த அகாடமி உறுப்பினர்கள் பலரும் இதற்கான மாடல் என நிறைய வரைந்து தள்ளினார்கள். இதில் எம்.ஜி.எம் என்ற கம்பெனியின் ஆர்ட் டைரக்டர் 'செட்ரிக் ஜிப்பான்ஸ்' என்பவரும் ஒரு மாடல் வரைந்தார். அந்த மாடல் பலருக்கும் பிடித்துப் போக அதுவே இறுதித் தேர்வானது. டேபிள் கிளாத் ஒன்றில் ஜிப்பான்ஸ் வரைந்த மாடலைக் கொடுத்து 'ஜார்ஜ் ஸ்டான்ஸி' என்பவரை சிலை வடிக்கச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்கள். ஸ்டான்ஸி அன்று உருவாக்கிய அந்த சிலைதான் இன்றுவரை அகாடமி விருது சிலையாக தொடர்ந்து வந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது (பார்க்க படம்). ஆரம்பத்தில் இந்த சிலை வெண்கலத்தான சிலையாக வடிக்கப்பட்டுதான் விருதாக வழங்கப்பட்டது.
ஒரு முறை இந்த சிலை செய்யப்பட்டு அகாடமிக்கு வந்தபோது அப்போதைய அகாடமியின் செயலாளர் மார்கரெட் ஹெரிக் “இந்த சிலை எங்க மாமா 'ஆஸ்கார்' மாதிரியே இருக்குப்பா..!” என்று கிண்டலடித்துள்ளார் (கிண்டல் இவரது மாமா பற்றியதுதான்). இதனால் சிலையைக் குறிப்பிடும்போது அவர் 'ஆஸ்கார்' என்றே சொல்வது பலரையும் பாதித்து, பிடித்துப் போய் “அட..! சொல்வதற்கும் கூட இது எளிதாக இருக்கிறதே..!” என்று எண்ணி பலரும் இதை 'ஆஸ்கார் விருது' என தப்பிதமாக குறிப்பிடப்போய் மெல்ல, மெல்ல 'அகாடமி விருது', 'ஆஸ்கார் விருது' ஆக பெயர் மாறிப் போனது. இன்றைக்கும் ஆஸ்கார் விருது என்றால் விளக்கம் ஏதுமின்றி அனைவராலும் புரிந்து கொள்ளப்படும் விருதின் நிஜ பெயரைச் சொன்னால் இன்று பெரும்பாலானவர்களுக்குப் புரிவதில்லை. 'எந்த அகாடமி...?, எந்த விருது..? என எதிர் கேள்வி கேட்கும் நிலையே உருவாகிவிட்டது. இன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் ஆஸ்காரின் பழைய கதையையும், தற்போதைய நிலையையும் நினைக்கும் போது நமக்கு ஏற்படுவது ஒரே உணர்வு தான்.! அது ஆச்சரியம்..!!!
இந்த முறை ஆஸ்காருக்கு பரிந்துரைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் படங்களும் அது தொடர்புடையவர்களின் பெயர்களும் கீழே..!
